Rally to urge Jordan River hearings

Clearing and blasting near Jordan River is creating shockwaves among opponents of Western Forest Products plans to create 319 lots on sensitive stretches of land around Jordan River, Otter Point and Shirley.
Roads are already being built in the Sandcut Creek area, even though the Highways Ministry’s provincial approving officer has not yet made a decision on the subdivisions, said Maurita Prato of the Dogwood Initiative, one of the groups organizing a rally at noon Thursday at Library Square, 735 Broughton St., demanding that public hearings be held into the applications.

At a crossroads: Critical challenges facing B.C. pulp mills

Earlier this year, a report by Poyry Forest Industry Consulting looked at the competitiveness of British Columbia’s pulp and paper sector and cautioned that it was “at a crossroads.” In developing the report, the consulting firm looked at the hosting conditions of all major pulp and paper producing regions globally and concluded that operations in B.C. are disadvantaged in many ways.

Land Conservancy donates 65 hectares to CRD

Some 65 hectares of older, second-growth Douglas fir forest, large red cedar, open bluffs and wetlands have been donated to the Capital Regional District by the Land Conservancy.
The land, adjacent to Mount Work Regional Park in the Highlands, is valued at $2.2 million.
